Even though Tongans are typically well-educated, an alarming percentage cannot find good Tonga jobs. Because Tonga is a relatively small and developing country, there simply haven’t been all that many career options, especially for those aged 25 years or under.
That’s why so many Tongans feel compelled to move to other countries: to find better employment opportunities, higher education, and in-demand careers. In fact, according to some estimates, there may be more Tongans living abroad than within Tonga itself. The vast majority of these live in other English-speaking countries including the United States, New Zealand and Australia.
Based on per capita of the population, Tonga might very well have more Ph.D.s than any other country, with the majority of graduate and medical degrees being obtained overseas.
The Government of Tonga recognizes the importance of increasing Tonga employment, and is initiating and supporting various programs to promote economic growth. Current development plans focus on growing the private sector, increasing tourism, revitalizing and improving agricultural productivity, and upgrading the nation’s communications and transportation systems.
Additionally, efforts are also being made to diversify and to discover additional ways to create more Tonga jobs.
The Tongan Ministry of Training, Employment, Youth and Sport has the mandate to strengthen the provision of industry-aligned technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in an effort to reduce unemployment rates among Tonga’s young people, and to improve income opportunities.
Tapping Into The Increasingly Global Workforce
There’s a global, growing trend towards outsourcing, which could potentially generate hundreds of full-time jobs for younger Tongans… if they can become equipped with in-demand skills for the 21st century.
Timothy Ferris recently authored a New York Times best-selling book called The 4-Hour Workweek, where he discusses outsourcing many tasks overseas, where the cost of living is considerably lower than in the United States, UK, or Canada. As a consequence of the intense popularity of the book, the outsourcing organizations in India which he had recommended were literally overrun with new business… to such an extent, that productivity and results took a major nose-dive.
The Philippines have also become another excellent source of online outsourcers. In fact, the demand for Filipino workers grew so rapidly, that some online job-search websites in the Philippines went so far as to deactivate all foreign accounts and job postings… because they were becoming overwhelmed with the incredible demand!
